A free, online 4K TV is being launched this year across the United States. It is called, also known as ATSC 3.0, and it promises a revolution not just in resolution – for the first time you'll be able to see via antenna – but in the way you watch tv broadcast. More than 60 stations in 40 markets have been or are planning to start broadcasting by the end of this year.
Assuming you're in one of those markets, you'll also need something to receive a signal. If your antenna can receive HD right now, it will work well with next-generation TV signals. Decoding those signals, however, is a different story. You will need a new TV or a new tuner for your existing TV. Twenty TVs with integrated ATSC 3.0 controllers were announced atand they will start shipping this spring (sorry, no one will be there in time ). No tuners have been officially announced so far, but we hope to hear something official soon.
The easiest way to get Next Gen TV is to install the tuner on your TV. Conveniently, LG, Samsung and Sony are aiming for obligations this year with multiple models.
